The European Commission has recently adopted the initiative "i2010: European Information Society 2010" in the framework of the Luxembourg presidency of the EU to boost growth and jobs in the information society and media industries. Since ICTs have become a key-driver for the European economy, a regulatory framework for the European digital economy will be put in place to enhance investment in this promising sector. This 5-year strategy should enable Europe to be more competitive.
Since 14 June 2005, GÉANT2 has been using pulsed light (photons), rather than electrons, to carry huge volumes of research data faster than ever before. Europe´s research network is now supplied by unprecedented computing power to an estimated 3 million users from over 3,500 academic institutions in 34 countries across Europe. Compared with similar research networks in the world, GÉANT2 innovates by seamlessly combining dark fibre with more traditional broadband technology.
