The development of intelligent materials, i.e. materials that are endowed with novel and unique properties and functions, is the key theme of the recently published 6th issue of the FOCUS on Research and Innovation in Luxembourg magazine. The aim of the publication, which is disseminated to companies, universities, investors and decision-makers in over 100 countries, is to make science, technology and innovation in Luxembourg known to a wide international audience.
The Grand Duchy upholds a proud tradition in the manufacture and processing of innovative materials, established more than a century ago. Innovation in the Luxembourg steel industry laid the base for the subsequent development of materials and processing technologies. Today, R&D conducted in the Grand Duchy is enhancing products such as concrete, glass, ceramics and polymers and engineering new substances that include high-performance metals and high-tech composites, inspiring applications in a wide range of sectors.
The sixth edition of FOCUS on Research and Innovation in Luxembourg portrays global companies such as DuPont de Nemours, Goodyear, Guardian, Delphi and IEE which are designing and developing new materials in Luxembourg, in view of applications for the automotive, aerospace, electronics and construction industries, to name but a few. It also presents niches in the area of intelligent materials and surfaces that are being explored by the country’s public research centres with the aim of creating a bridge between fundamental research and practical applications for industry.
Design is actively promoted as a tool for innovation in the Grand Duchy’s industry. The "Innovative Spaces" section of the magazine presents several innovative products developed through design. In addition, the "Public Research" section provides an insight in material research activities undertaken by the University of Luxembourg, as well as in the recently established Luxembourg Clinical Proteomics (LCP) Initiative. This edition of FOCUS also gives you an opportunity to discover a range of bright ideas that are currently shaping cutting-edge applications — such as gesture recognition technology, innovative wastewater treatment solutions and the first Luxembourg-built satellites sent out into space.
