Main axes of research

EVA develops both fundamental and applied research projects whose purpose is to manage natural resources and assist decision-makers for environmental issues. The research in this area involves organisms that play a central role in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, both natural and artificial (wastewater treatment plants, reactors, etc.). The projects examine the ecological, eco-toxicological or taxonomic aspects of these organisms, depending on the issues raised.

Research subjects:

  • Diversity of living communities and bio-indication of the ecological status of natural or heavily modified ecosystems
  • Nature conservation
  • Eco-toxicology of fresh waters
  • Microbial ecology
  • Risk assessment and management of microbiological hazards

Application domains

  • Environmental monitoring
  • Ecological restoration
  • Renaturation
  • Phytoremediation and microbiological remediation of polluted soils
  • Liquid and solid waste water treatment and management
  • Nature conservation

Current research projects

  • Proteomic and transcriptomic study of the action of emerging chemical pollutants on a freshwater fish: the gudgeon (Gobio gobio (L.))
  • Application of niche-based modelling techniques to long-term common bird monitoring data
  • Cell-culture based techniques for the determination of the infective status of waterborne pathogens cell-culture based techniques for the determination of the infective status of waterborne pathogens
  • Towards a sustainable management of pond diversity at the landscape level
  • Polyphasic taxonomy of toxic freshwater cyanobacteria
