Automotive Automotive industry Currently hosting more than 30 key automotive components players and several renowned R&D centres, Luxembourg already has a strong strategic position in the European automotive components industry. The Government is actively encouraging investment and research to continue fostering Luxembourg’s position, while technological and business development is catalysed by high value added clustering activities. Luxembourg has become a key location for first and second tier automotive suppliers. They employ nearly 10,000 people on 30 sites, generating more than EUR 1.5 billion annual turnover. Key component suppliers have chosen Luxembourg for its highly competitive business environment. Car manufacturers in Germany, France and the United Kingdom, as well as the assembly lines in Belgium and the Netherlands, can be supplied from Luxembourg on a same-day delivery basis. Many companies, such as IEE, CEBI, CARLEX, Goodyear and Delphi, have major R&D centres in Luxembourg. More than 2,000 people are employed in automotive R&D departments. Luxembourg public research organisations also provide R&D support for businesses. They specialise in materials analysis, nanotechnologies and information technologies. This is done through collaborative R&D and innovation projects (competence mapping and competence creation), programmes in operational excellence, training and education, and business development. ILEA provides a strategic forum for automotive suppliers in Luxembourg by addressing issues of common concern; serving as a source of information and providing an industry voice on topics of interest.
