The Ideas programme of the Seventh European Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7) supports frontier research activities initiated by researchers. The objective of the programme is to stimulate the creativity, the dynamism and the excellence of European research and to attract researchers to Europe. It draws on a budget of €7.5 billion.

The programme targets individual research teams led by a principal researcher. All areas of science and technology (including engineering, socio-economic sciences and the humanities) are potentially eligible for this programme, which is implemented by the European Research Council (ERC).

Two financing schemes have been established:

• The Starting Independent Researcher Grant Scheme, which is designed for young researchers aiming to create or consolidate research teams;
• The Advanced Investigator Research Grant, which is open to experienced researchers aiming to set up a trailblazing research project.

To participate in one of these activities, applicants must respond to a call for project proposals. The participation rules are specified for each call.

To encourage Luxembourg's participation in the calls issued by the ERC, the National Research Fund offers dedicated financial aid.
