Alongside the budgets of public research organisations, the National Research Fund (FNR) is the primary financial source for scientific research projects in Luxembourg.

Dedicated to strengthening the capacity and competitiveness of Luxembourg research, the FNR has put into place several research programmes.

  • CORE, designed to support several thematic research priorities
  • INTER, which aims to promote international cooperation in the field of research
  • ATTRACT, where the objective is to attract young, promising researchers in Luxembourg
  • PEARL, designated for attracting experienced and internationally renowned researchers to Luxembourg

Along with these research programmes, the FNR manages several aid schemes:

  • AFR Grant Scheme, ("Aides à la formation recherche") is a grant scheme supporting researchers in their doctoral and postdoctoral training
  • Accompanying measures, which extend financial support to a number of initiatives in the field of research: promotion of scientific culture, training and mobility of researchers, organisation of scientific conferences, scientific publications.
  • ERC Grant Support, which supports and encourages Luxembourg’s participation in calls for project proposals launched by the European Research Council (ERC).

Public research organisations can also participate in or manage innovation clusters.
