Gabriel Lippmann Public Research Centre (CRP GL)

The Gabriel Lippmann Public Research Centre is a public organisation involved in applied scientific research and technological development, as well as the technology transfer and ongoing high-level training. Its activities are aimed at strengthening the country's economic tissue by creating new technological expertise within the Gabriel Lippmann Public Research Centre and transferring this know-how to companies.

In view of the current high stakes in sustainable development, whether scientific, technological, economic or environmental, the Gabriel Lippmann Public Research Centre has concentrated on 3 main areas: new material technology, particularly nanotechnology and developing equipment, sustainable management of natural resources and information society technology.

Over 80 researchers, researchers-teachers and post-graduate trainees conduct research within 4 units:

  • Cooperative informatics based on ICTs, e-commerce and knowledge management are the focus of the research conducted and expertise transferred by the Unit for the Research, Study and Development of IT (CREDI), which also coordinates high-level training courses and seminars held by the research centre.
  • Updating of Luxembourg legislation, above all to integrate aspects linked to the use of new information and communication technologies, is of particular interest to the Economic Law Laboratory (LDE).
  • The study of ecosystems, hydroclimatological monitoring and the area of agrobiotechnology are covered by the Unit for Research on the Environment and Biotechnology (CREBS).
  • Analyses of materials at atomic level with a view to improving them or developing new ones, developing equipment, as well as the most recent launch of a European nanotechnology centre, fall within the competence of the Materials Analysis Laboratory (LAM).

Since its foundation by Grand-Ducal Regulation in July 1987, the Gabriel Lippmann Public Research Centre has adopted an original approach by striking a balance between the criteria of economic benefit and scientific quality, rather than favouring one as opposed to the other. In this way, it continues to be actively involved in partnerships with companies and national authorities while, at the same time, successfully carrying out several new research projects with European financing and joining forces to introduce new university structures in Luxembourg.
